IBM Western Region (Chicago) had distributed a package of 10 IBM Punch Cards, each with a question "If your customer asks - Can you answer?" with Q1 - What is an Operating System, Q2 - How will an Operating System Help you, and an answer for the salesman on the reverse of each card. See Buttons 359 thru 368 for each of the questions. The final question, was Q10, Why OS/360?, and the answer summarized the 'good' things about OS/360, but to the SHARE attendees, the phrase became a plea, pronounced "WHY???? OS/360?" A small number of these buttons were distributed early in the week, and when Tom Steele then SHARE president introduced the Key Note Speaker at the general session, he said, "I would like to introduce our speaker, Mr. T. J. Watson, Jr., President of IBM, who will answer Q10!" Of course T.J. knew nothing about the marketing cards, which disappeared the next day from IBM forever.
