The SLAC VM system was finally shut down on 6 October 1998. Chuck Boehim (former VM Deputy Group Manager) sent the following note to several friends, describing that SLAC VM history: "Yesterday at 3pm PDT the SLAC VM system was shutdown for the last time. A crowd of well-wishers gathered for the event, including SCS staff, users, and alums. Some people like John Ehrman (Assembler H) and Ted Johnston (VM Group Deputy) and Chuck Dickens (former SCS director) came out of retirement to attend the event. People recalled how VM was the first 'personal computer' at SLAC, how SLAC had the first 3081 to ship, the first 3380 drives to ship, and had the REXX language years before it became part of CMS. The SLAC VM system was also the first Web server in the Western Hemisphere. There's many people who will miss it."
