The IBM FORTRAN compiler that complied with the ANSI 77 standard was no longer free, but cost money. It was also a plea to IBM to "get on with it" and produce a compiler that conformed to the Fortran 77 standard. Its first release was a PR disaster, as it implemented only the bare bones of the standard, and none of the IBM extensions that had been in FORTRAN H and FORTRAN Q. At the same time, Fujitsu released its F77 compiler, which *was* compatible with IBM's previous compilers, causing a certain amount of (shall we say) consternation on IBM's part, especially when SHARE invited Fujitsu to give a talk about it (at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim). The back wall of the room was covered with blue suiters!
