In 1976, SAS began distributing sample SAS programs that I had written, as file 13, SAS.MERRILL, on their product distribution tapes. By 1979, many users of those sample program had asked SAS for a book that would show how to use SAS for Computer Performance Evaluation, and Jane Helwig, then Vice President for Publications at SAS Institute, approached me to produce a book that SAS would publish and distribute, along with a sample tape of programs (Jim Goodnight was not willing to distribute it as a software product due to concerns about his support staff's ability to provide technical support). The book was written across 1979, and the working title was "The Analysis of SMF and RMF data using the SAS System", until it was finally ready to go to the printer, when Jane called to say that she and Jim and Jim and John didn't like that title, and they wondered if my ego could handle the title "Merrill's Guide to Computer Performance Evaluation", subtitled "Using the SAS System". That title went to the printed just before Christmas, 1979 (and it was printed at Kingsport Press, in my home town of Kingsport, Tennessee, a fact that never came up until I received the first copy in early 1980!). In 1983, IBM announced the new MVS/XA operating system, with completely revised SMF and RMF record formats, and users of the 1980 book were calling Judith (who I had met in 1980, we were married in 1981, when she was an executive with Royal Park fashions, and she had retired from the fashion industry to be a stay-at-home mother to my two children - I had been a single parent from 1975 onward) at home asking if there would be updates to the 1980 Merrill Guide. Because she knew how to establish and run the business side of a business, she convinced me that if I would write and support the software, she would run the business, and so I do and she does, and in 1984, SAS published the "Merrill's eXpanded Guide to Computer Performance Evaluation", and we chose MXG as the acronym for our Software Product. Initially distributed thru the SAS Publications Office, we took over full distribution and sales in 1992. This was the first button for the MXG product. See Button 462.
