The first SAS User Group meeting was held at Abbott Labs in Illinois, as a result of the work of one individual, XXX, who was a statistician at Abbot, who approached me at a SHARE meeting in 1974, suggesting there should be a meeting of SAS users. I agreed, and said it would happen if he made it happen, and about 50 users and the four SAS principles (Jim Goodnight, Jim Barr, John Sahl, and Jane Helwig) gathered for the two-day meeting, at which the formal plan for the real user group was established. XXX and his wife did all of the administration for the first formal meeting, the following year, in Orlando.
